The Latest Travel Restrictions
Mexico City (CNN) — Mexico City has issued a travel advisory to passengers traveling to and from the United States due to the ongoing construction of a new highway.
The new highway will add more than 20 miles of new road on Mexico City’s main thoroughfare between the city’s international airport and the city center, CNN affiliate Televisa reports.
The highway is expected to create “a bottleneck,” the Mexican government has warned, adding that the highway is not designed to support cars traveling more than 40 miles per hour, according to Televilla.
It is not clear when the new highway was approved or how long it will be in place.CNN Traveler Danica McBride has been reporting for CNN since 2002.

The road is being built to accommodate the expansion of the I-5 freeway, a major urban expansion project that will increase the speed limit from 55 to 70 miles per day on weekends and evenings, according the project’s website.
The construction is scheduled to begin by the end of 2019.
It will increase travel between the cities of Monterrey, Guanajuato and Yucatan from 2,500 to 5,500 vehicles a day, the project says.
The project also has planned a major upgrade to the city limits of Guanajucaro and Yucaipa, adding traffic to the main thoroughfares of the capital.
The road will create a bottleneck and create congestion for drivers, the highway project says, adding “an additional 5 to 7 miles per weekday will be closed.”
